Toronto Area Youth Mental Health Programs A Runaway Success Thanks To OTF Grants

CameronHelps  completed a successful year of programming in Toronto area schools and in local communities, thanks to generous funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). A special event to celebrate the year was held on Sunday June 2 in Port Credit where local MPP Charles Sousa and Monty Fidda, an OTF Grant Review Team member, were on hand to congratulate the charity on the work it has been doing since receiving OTF grants in 2015 and 2016.

“The Ontario Trillium Foundation has provided annual funding to more than 50 schools, community, and health centres across Toronto, Halton and Peel, delivering much-needed youth programs that focus on mental health,” says Charles Sousa, MPP for Mississauga South.

In 2016, CameronHelps received a $225,000 grant over two years from OTF to develop a Team Unbreakable mental health wellness run program in Toronto in partnership with area schools. This was followed by a $138,900 grant over a two-year period to develop community programs in Halton and Peel. MPP Sousa personally congratulated one of the charity’s board members, Bob Wordham, on raising more than $100,000 for CameronHelps by running a half-marathon in May for his 80th birthday.

“The support we have received from the OTF has enabled CameronHelps to reach more “at-risk” youth who are suffering from anxiety, depression and mental illness,” said Executive Director Carl Worrell.

The charity is helping them to understand the positive benefits of physical health on mental health through our “Team Unbreakable” run-wellness programs, he said.

An agency of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is one of Canada’s largest granting foundations. With a budget of over $136 million, OTF awards grants to some 1,000 projects every year to build healthy and vibrant Ontario communities. www.otf.ca
